ROCKINGHAM — Two $60,000 purses were on the line late in the week at Rockingham Dragway for the SFG World Series of Bracket Racing.

The event was originally scheduled for Thursday through Saturday, but was hyphenated into two days due to rain from a tropical system skirting the coast predicted for the weekend.

Four hundred drivers went head-to-head down the strip to try to collect the giant checks.

Texan Cory Gulitti made it to the winner’s circle early Friday morning, with action on the first day rolling until after midnight.

Racing resumed early Friday afternoon, with several drivers getting a red light for a false start.

The competition came just two days after the Dragway hosted Day 2 of HOT ROD Drag Week.

“HOT ROD and MotorTrend Magazine has been the stable of validation and having their Drag Week event running at Rockingham Dragway is an absolute dream,” said Dan VanHorn, who co-owns the track with Al Gennarelli. “The Who’s Who in drag and drive racing went down our track and we are proud of how the facility represented itself and the community.”

The Dragway staff will have a few days off before hosting ADRL’s Dragstock next weekend.

Free tickets for that event are available at several local businesses.
