CORDOVA — In middle school soccer action Monday, the Rockingham Middle School boys’ and girls’ soccer teams traveled to in-county opponent Cordova Middle School and swept the home competition.

It was the Rockets’ and Lady Rockets’ third game of the season, as both teams improved to 3-0 on the spring.

Lopez’s hat trick completes comeback

The Rockets faced a tough Cavaliers team, and had to come back not once, but twice to earn Monday’s win. At the final whistle, it was eighth grader Chris Lopez who had recorded all three of his team’s goal to escape with a 3-2 victory.

Head coach Daniel Webb’s team went down 1-0 early thanks to a Jesus Castro goal for the Cavaliers. Lopez scored the first equalizer just a couple of minutes later, but another Cordova goal, also by Castro, gave the Cavs a 2-1 advantage at halftime.

Rockingham would keep the Cavaliers out of the net in the second half, and use two more Lopez goals to overcome the one-goal deficit.

The Rockets (3-0) will head to Ellerbe Middle School Tuesday afternoon for their final game of the week. It’s set for a 5 p.m. start.

Lady Rockets blank Cordova to stay undefeated

Prior to the boys’ win, the Lady Rockets didn’t have much trouble with the Lady Cavaliers, as they rolled to a 6-0 victory. The win marked Rockingham’s third-straight win by that score.

Also finding the back of the net for the second-straight game were fellow eighth graders Andrea Ellerbe and C’Nedra Hinson, who each now have two goals on the season.

Rounding out the scoring for Rockingham were eighth grader Jennifer Gomez and sixth grader Jamyia Lindsey. Allie Rodgers recorded two assists in the win, with Hinson adding one of her own. In net, Makailah Jackson snagged three saves for the Lady Rockets.

The girls’ soccer team (3-0) will also face Ellerbe Tuesday, beginning at 4 p.m.
