ROCKINGHAM — Those ready for the next race in the Crown 9 Champion Series will have to wait another month.

Rockingham Speedway announced on Wednesday that there will be no race this coming weekend as originally scheduled.

“Due to the devastating impact of Hurricane Helene on the communities of several of our racers, we are canceling the third race in the Crown 9 Championship at The Rock, which was set for this Saturday, October 5,” reads a post made late Wednesday morning on Facebook.

“We remain committed to supporting relief efforts and are actively collecting donations for Western NC,” the post continues. “We’re proud to join the initiatives led by our neighbors at Bostick BP & Towing and Warriors in Motion to help those in need.”

The speedway is one of several drop-off locations across Richmond County.

“Your contributions are greatly appreciated as we come together during this challenging time,” the post concludes. “Thank you for your support.”

The Crown 9 is the Rock’s own five-race series featuring Ford Crown Victorias (Mercury Grand Marquis and Lincoln Town Cars are also permitted) on the track’s infield road course.

On Monday, the speedway announced a few new rules for drivers and teams.

The rules for drivers pertain to safety gear: Drivers must wear closed-toe shoes or boots, pants, a fire jacket and a helmet.

As for the teams, they are not allowed to bring in outside food or alcohol. Teams are also only allowed one vehicle in addition to a tow vehicle.
