RSHS wrestling loses two non-conference matches

TROY — The Richmond Senior High School wrestling program faced two non-conference opponents last Tuesday in its second meet of the season.

Competing at Montgomery Central High School, the Raiders lost to the host Timberwolves and Sun Valley High School.

Richmond suffered a 72-12 loss to Montgomery Central and tied Sun Valley 30-30. The Spartans were awarded the win because they had more near falls.

Head coach Andre’ Ellerbe noted that due to a limited roster, the Raiders had to forfeit several matches. As a result, moving forward, Richmond’s focus will shift to individual performances instead of team victories he said.

“We had a great showing against two great teams outside of our conference,” Ellerbe said. “We wrestled short-handed and still came very close to Sun Valley.

“As we move forward, we will focus on individual records instead of team records. Our wrestler of the week is Adam Estridge, who used the ‘Adam Lock’ to get wins in both matches.”

Against the Timberwolves, Richmond surrendered 30 points in five forfeits. Montgomery Central won seven matches via pinfall.

The Raiders’ 12 points came courtesy of pinfall wins by junior Adam Estridge (157-pounds) and sophomore Demonte Martin (285-pounds).

Estridge, the only Raider to pick up two wins on the night, defeated Jose Leyva. Martin notched his first victory of the winter by pinning Aaron DeBray.

Going match-for-match with Sun Valley, Richmond saw four wrestlers collect six points apiece with a pin. The other six points were earned by sophomore Jason Gainey (190-pounds) with a forfeit.

Freshman Hayden Smith pinned Benjamin Bixen in the 146-pound bout and Estridge (157-pounds) won his second match of the meet over Chris Pangalos.

Junior Amir Vaughan (175-pounds) picked up his first win against Austin Lux and sophomore Jordan Hamilton (215-pounds) entered the win column by pinning Heriberto Molina.

The Raiders (0-4) will host its lone Sandhills Athletic Conference match of the season on Wednesday at 6 p.m.

The Raiders will host Hoke County, Lee County and Pinecrest high schools at the Ninth Grade Academy.
