ROCKINGHAM — Earning his first career recognition, senior soccer player Samuel Hawks has been named the Official Richmond County Male Student-Athlete of the Week, presented by HWY 55.

Back on the varsity team for his second season, Hawks is a four-year member of the Raider soccer program. His efforts in a non-conference road game helped Richmond capture its second win of the season.

Hawks has filled his role nicely this season, helping the Raiders’ offense move the ball down the field and create scoring opportunities.

“IN THE NET” WITH SAMUEL HAWKS

In seven total varsity matches or games played last week, the Raider soccer team was the only Richmond program to earn a victory.

After failing to score two nights before, Richmond blasted a season-high number of goals in a 9-0 win over Uwharrie Charter Academy last Wednesday.

Hawks, a senior center midfielder, was a big part of the scoring barrage. He had his first goal of the season, and second career varsity goal, while also adding an assist. Both came in the second half, which resulted in six goals for Richmond.

After taking a 3-0 lead in the first 40 minutes of play, Richmond added two more tallies before Hawks found the net in the 56th minute to make it 6-0.

Making a run down the field was sophomore forward Memphis Jacobs, who slid the ball into the center of the box to Hawks. Taking possession, Hawks one-timed his shot past a sliding defender from 15 yards.

In the 63rd minute, Hawks fed the ball to senior teammate James Eason at the top of the 18-yard box, which led to his assist and a 7-0 lead. Hawks tallied three shots in the win.

Richmond (2-2), which was rained out on Monday, will begin Sandhills Athletic Conference play on Wednesday. Hosting Southern Lee High School (2-1), action will get underway at 7 p.m.
