Schedule changes made for RSHS athletics ahead of TS Debby

ROCKINGHAM — Nearly a week before the first official game or match of the 2024 fall sports season, local teams are experiencing schedule changes.

Due to the projected forecast of Tropical Storm Debby, Richmond County Schools announced that all after-school activities for Thursday and Friday were canceled.

That put a halt to the last couple of practices for the Richmond boys’ soccer and volleyball teams, both of which will open the season Monday.

The Lady Raider volleyball team was also supposed to participate in a camp hosted by Tusculum University. Head coach Ashleigh Larsen posted that it, too, was canceled.

A pre-season soccer jamboree at Independence High School also folded due to the threat of heavy rain and high winds.

With TS Debby slowly moving up the coast, the Raider football team had to put a pause on its preseason action.

The program’s picture day, originally scheduled for Thursday, has been moved to Monday. Richmond’s home scrimmage against South Garner High School was rescheduled for Tuesday at 10 a.m.

Richmond’s tennis and cross country programs, which won’t start their seasons until later this month, were also impacted.

Head tennis coach Jessica Covington shared that the final day of tennis camp will resume Monday at 9 a.m.
