HAMLET — A local travel wrestling organization will soon be opening sign-ups for the upcoming season.

Real Wrestlers Real Heroes, a travel club based in Richmond County, will hold its first sign-up Sunday, Aug. 25 at Richmond County Ninth Grade Academy.

The first sign-up and practice period will run from 3:30 p.m. until 5:30 p.m.

RWRH was founded a few years ago by Joseph Earle Nicholson, a long-time staple in the local wrestling and coaching scene. “Coach Nic,” as he’s known, coached for 26 years at Richmond Senior High School and has spent the past two seasons at Marlboro County High School.

While the initial sign-up day is slated for Sunday, Nicholson said interested wrestlers can join the program at any time. RWRH practices each Sunday at RCNGA beginning at 3:30 p.m.

The wrestling club is open to boys and girls who are in fifth grade through 12th grade. Nicholson added that third and fourth grade wrestlers will be accepted as long as they sign up with a partner.

The cost per wrestler each month is $25, a fee that Nicholson said covers the club’s insurance and helps with equipment, uniforms and tournament expenses.

“Our focus is on muscular endurance, skill development, mental toughness, strategy and good character,” Nicholson said of the program.

“Starting in March, we will compete in two tournaments per month through June. Wrestlers that qualify will then go compete in the high school nationals in Virginia Beach.”

Currently, RWRH consists of wrestlers from Richmond, Marlboro, Scotland and Chesterfield counties. This past spring, K’Mauri Morgan and Dylan Nunez, two of the club’s wrestlers, made it to nationals.

If interested, an email can be sent to Nicholson at coachnic2@gmail.com. Include each wrestler‘s name, phone number, address, date of birth, email, years of experience and weight.
