Slow start ends in loss for Raiders

FAYETTEVILLE — The Richmond Senior High School boys’ basketball team suffered its second straight loss to start the season Friday.

Playing a non-conference game at Westover High School, the Raiders lost 78-40.

Senior Davion Ingram was Richmond’s leading scorer with 13 points. Freshmen Xander Chavis and Kerick Hairston each netted six points in the loss.

Also finding the basket for the Raiders were sophomore BJ Hinson (4 points), freshman Donovan Jones (4 points), junior Zamarion Robinson (4 points) and senior Ahaiver McDonald (3 points).

A slow start led to a 28-6 deficit at the end of the first quarter. Richmond’s six points came from Ingram and McDonald. Ingram connected on a three-pointer and a bucket, with McDonald adding a free throw.

The Raiders put together a scoring run of 16-13 in the second quarter to cut their halftime deficit to 41-22.

Hairston led the way in the second for Richmond, draining a pair of three-balls for his six points. Robinson also collected all of his scoring in the second with two field goals.

Netting a basket apiece in the second were Ingram, Hinson and Jones.

The third quarter saw just eight more points go on the board for Richmond. Scoring two points each from the field were McDonald, Hinson and Jones, while Ingram added two shots from the line.

Westover pulled away with a 24-10 run in the final stanza. Chavis joined the scoring and sank a tandem of three-pointers for his six points. Ingram capped his team-leading performance with two more field goals.

The Raiders (0-2) play later Saturday at the Crown Coliseum in Fayetteville. Richmond and New Life Christian Academy (3-7) tip-off at 2:30 p.m.
