RAEFORD — The Richmond Senior High School junior varsity volleyball team picked up another win Tuesday, sweeping Hoke County High School in two sets.

Returning to the hardwood for the first time since Dec. 17, the Lady Raiders took the win by set scores of 25-16 and 25-14.

Head coach Melissa Dennis’ squad reentered to the win column after seeing its six-game winning streak snapped in the team’s match against Jack Britt High School heading into the holiday break.

Like in the varsity match, Richmond overcame a slow start to earn the win in straight sets. Dennis explained she went with a different lineup than she’s used the last several matches and was pleased to see the girls adapt throughout the match.

“The energy level was low in the whole gym starting out and it was hard to get the girls excited,” Dennis said, citing the warm temperature in Hoke County’s gym. “But they started coming alive as the game went on.

“With the different lineup, the girls really had to communicate with each other. And they came through,” Dennis added.

One player who stood out to Dennis was sophomore outside hitter Quston Leviner, who “had really great, aggressive serves” against the Lady Bucks. Leviner served six points in the first set and seven points in the second set, including four aces.

Dennis added that freshman outside hitter Emma Altman “had some big serves in the first game.” Although her team didn’t have many “big net plays,” Dennis was pleased with her players making “smart plays” to score points.

Now 7-4 on the season, the JV Lady Raiders will host Lumberton High School on Wednesday, starting at 5 p.m. Richmond defeated the Lady Pirates in two sets on Dec. 1.
