RAEFORD — For the first time since the early beginnings of Sandhills Athletic Conference play, the Richmond Senior High School girls’ junior varsity basketball team is above the .500 mark.

On the road at Hoke County High School on Tuesday, the Lady Raiders defeated the Lady Bucks 60-42.

Using a 37-point second half, Richmond saw its record improve to 8-7 overall and 6-5 against SAC opponents. Freshman shooting guard Nyla Stroman lit up the scoreboard with 21 points, including a team-high three three-pointers.

Fellow freshman center EJ Davis had her best scoring performance of the season with 11 points, all coming in the middle quarters. Sophomore Daniah McDonald netted nine points, while Joy Styles and C’Nedra Hinson chipped in eight and seven points, respectively, all in the second half.

“Nyla set it off tonight,” head coach Demi Watkins said. “ She came out hot. EJ stepped up tonight to add to the scoreboard.

“We were 50 percent from the free throw line, which is good, but we still need to get better,” she added.

A big first quarter by the Lady Raiders saw them jump out to a 15-2 lead. Stroman started things off with back-to-back triples and added a field goal for her first eight points.

McDonald was also helpful in the first quarter, netting a bucket and three free throws for five points. Sophomore Raven Robinson would add her only two points in the game.

Hoke County outscored Richmond 12-8 in the second, but the Lady Raiders still took a 23-14 lead into the locker room. Davis netted three field goals for six points in the stanza, while Mariah Waddell scored two points.

A 20-12 run in the third quarter for Richmond helped put the game away. Stroman returned to the scoresheet with six points on three baskets, and Davis added five more points.

Styles scored her first four points, while Hinson netted three points and McDonald added a basket.

In the final frame, it would be Stroman’s seven points that led the Lady Raiders to another win. Hinson and Styles evenly split eight points on the board, and McDonald rounded things out with her final basket.

“We have a big task this Friday against Lumberton,” Watkins closed. “We are getting ready for the battle.”

The JV Lady Raiders will host the Lady Pirates at 5 p.m. in Rockingham in another SAC contest.
