ROCKINGHAM — An electric start to her career has one member of the Richmond Senior High School girls’ golf team up next in The Richmond Observer’s weekly feature series.

Talley Webb, a freshman who attends Richmond County Ninth Grade Academy, has been named the Official Richmond County Female Student-Athlete of the Week presented by Rockingham NC Self Storage.

Two nine-hole matches for the Lady Raiders last week resulted in a pair of team-leading scores for Webb, who also found out this week she’s headed to the postseason.

With her selection this week, Webb earned her first career recognition.

“CLASSROOM CREDITS” WITH TALLEY WEBB

Currently a little more than a month into her first semester of high school, Webb is an honors student at the Ninth Grade Academy who says academics are just as important to her as to how she performs on the golf course.

This fall, Webb is taking four courses — English I Honors, Weight Training Honors and World History Honors at RCNGA and Foundations of Health Science at the high school.

In the spring semester, Webb will take four additional courses — Earth and Environmental Science Honors, Math 2 Honors, Microsoft Word and PowerPoint and Weight Training Honors. Webb also plans to join the National Beta Club.

“My favorite class this semester is Health Science because it’s a lot of fun,” Webb explained. “It’s something that I’m interested in and I want to take sonograms.”

The Lady Raiders played nine-hole matches at Sanford Golf Course and Foxfire Resort last week. Webb shot matching scores of 46 both times, putting her at the top of Richmond’s scorecard.

Those scores have been the lowest nine-hole postings of her young high school career and she finished ninth in the field at Foxfire.

Through four competitions this season (three nine-hole matches and one 18-hole contest), Webb is leading the Lady Raiders with an average score of 47.2 shots per nine holes.

She found out following Monday’s 18-hole contest that she has already qualified for the NCHSAA 4A Central Regional championship. Webb became the first Lady Raider to punch her postseason ticket since former player Hailey Miller in 2019.

Richmond has another 18-hole match next Monday at Whispering Pines Golf Club. Tee times start at 2 p.m.
