ROCKINGHAM — Another full schedule of Richmond Senior High School athletics is on deck this week, along with some middle school action on campus.

With both basketball teams still playing in the NCHSAA 4A East playoffs, the excitement will blend with the second week of spring sports.

Richmond hoops have third round home games

After rolling through the second round Friday, Richmond’s boys and girls basketball teams will both play at home Tuesday.

Thanks to an upset in the second round, the No. 5 Lady Raiders (24-4) get another home game. They will host No. 20 Southeast Raleigh (20-8), who bounced No. 4 Willow Spring High School.

The No. 2 Raiders (23-5), who secured home-court advantage throughout the playoffs, will host No. 7 Cardinal Gibbons (18-7).

Tipping off at 6 p.m. will be the girls game, followed by the boys at 7:30 p.m. The Richmond Observer will publish previews for each game.

Should either team win, the fourth round of the NCHSAA 4A East state playoffs will be played Friday.

Raider baseball has first three-game week

Looking to build off its season-opening win last Tuesday, the Raider baseball team will play two Sandhills Athletic Conference games and one non-conference game.

Head coach Eric Brown and the Raiders (1-0) will sandwich their conference-opening series with Southern Lee High School (1-2) around a non-conference visit from Sun Valley High School (1-0).

Richmond will host Southern Lee Tuesday and make the trip to Sanford Friday, with both games starting at 7 p.m. Sun Valley will visit Raider Stadium Wednesday at 6 p.m.

The JV Raiders will play two games this week, starting at home against Southern Lee Tuesday, followed by an away game against the JV Cavaliers Friday. Both games start at 4 p.m.

Lady Raider softball set to open conference action

After splitting its opening week with a win and a loss, the Lady Raider softball team will also start SAC play this week.

The Lady Raiders (1-1) and head coach Mike Way will have a pair of home games against Southern Lee (2-0) and Pinecrest (0-2) high schools.

First pitch against the Lady Cavaliers is set for 6 p.m. Tuesday and the Lady Patriots will visit Friday at 7 p.m.

The JV Lady Raiders (1-0) will only host Pinecrest this week, playing Friday at 5 p.m.

Lady Raider soccer to play two non-conference matches

Starting the season with a pair of wins, the Lady Raider soccer team will face two tough non-conference challenges this week.

Head coach Chris Larsen and the Lady Raiders (2-0) will host Terry Sanford High School (1-1) Wednesday before hitting the road to Independence High School (0-1-1) Friday. Both matches will begin at 7 p.m.

The JV Lady Raiders (1-0) will only host Terry Sanford Wednesday at 5:15 p.m.

Richmond track and field teams ready for home meet

Raider tennis team opens season

Having to wait a few extra days before starting its season, the Richmond boys tennis team will welcome in two SAC opponents this week.

The Raiders and head coach Jessica Covington will host Pinecrest and Hoke County high schools Tuesday and Thursday. Singles matches will start at 4 p.m.

Middle school jamborees scheduled at Richmond Senior

Part of a county-wide initiative to incorporate middle school athletics with Richmond Senior High School, three spring sport middle school jamborees are planned for this week.

Richmond’s soccer and softball fields will be in use by the county’s four middle schools Monday.

The Ellerbe, Hamlet and Rockingham baseball teams will scrimmage under the lights Thursday. All three jamborees will start at 5:30 p.m. with a $5 admission.
