ROCKINGHAM — A four-day school week following the Labor Day holiday will be jammed packed with Richmond Senior athletics.

For the first time this school year, all of Richmond’s fall sports programs will be in action. The final team, the Lady Raider golf team, is set to open its season on Tuesday.

Lady Raider volleyball continues conference play

After opening Sandhills Athletic Conference play by splitting a pair of matches last week, the Lady Raiders will play on three consecutive nights this week.

All at home, two of the matches will be against SAC opponents. Richmond (4-4, 1-1 SAC) and head coach Ashleigh Larsen will start play on Tuesday against Hoke County High School (2-6, 0-2 SAC).

That will be followed by a non-conference contest with neighboring Anson High School (5-1) on Wednesday, and the week will end on Thursday with Union Pines High School (4-3, 1-0 SAC) visiting Rockingham.

All varsity matches are slated to start around 6 p.m., following the junior varsity Lady Raiders (5-3, 1-1 SAC), which will begin at 5 p.m.

Raider soccer returns with two matches

Head coach Chris Larsen and the Raider soccer team will look to put a loss to Lumberton behind them and move forward with one SAC and one non-conference match this week.

The Raiders (2-3-1, 1-0 SAC) have a chance to stay undefeated early in conference play when they travel to Pinecrest High School (1-4, 0-0 SAC) on Wednesday. Play will start at 7 p.m

A quick turnaround will see a home match on Thursday against non-conference Piedmont High School (6-0-1) at 6 p.m.

The JV Raiders (1-1-2, 0-0 SAC) will open SAC play at Pinecrest on Wednesday, kicking off at 5 p.m.

Lady Raider tennis eyes return to win column

A light week for the Lady Raider tennis team will feature just one SAC match on the road at Lee County High School on Tuesday.

Richmond (1-2, 1-2 SAC) and head coach Jessica Covington split a pair of conference matches last week and look to get back to the .500 mark.

Singles matches against the Lady Yellow Jackets will begin at 4 p.m.

Cross country teams set for home meet

Back on the course this week for their second race of the season, the Richmond boys’ and girls’ cross country teams will get to run in front of their home crowd.

At Union Pines last week, the Raiders and Lady Raiders both finished second out of three teams on a “tough” course to begin the season.

Tuesday’s meet will offer Richmond’s runners the familiarity of Hinson Lake’s outer loop, where the teams will compete in a 3.2-mile race.

Hoke County and Southern Lee high schools will also be running. Races are set to begin at 5 p.m.

Lady Raider golf team starts season

The final fall sports program to begin its season is the Lady Raider golf team, coached by Keith Parsons.

Richmond will tee off a nine-hole match against other SAC teams at Deercroft Golf Club in Scotland County on Tuesday at 3 p.m.

The Richmond Observer will publish a season preview soon.

Football teams conclude non-conference schedule

A grueling non-conference slate will wrap up for the Richmond varsity and junior varsity football teams this week against South View High School.

The varsity Raiders and head coach Bryan Till are 0-3, the first time in school history starting a season with that record. Richmond suffered a 31-0 loss to Cardinal Gibbons on Friday, and hopes to right the ship against the Tigers (0-2) this week.

Friday’s meeting will end a four-game non-conference schedule for Richmond. Kickoff at South View is set for 7:30 p.m.

The JV Raiders (0-2) nearly earned a win last week against the JV Crusaders, and will host the JV Tigers on Thursday at 6:30 p.m.
