ROCKINGHAM — The first full week of winter sports is set to get underway for Richmond Senior High School.

While the basketball and wrestling programs have already opened their seasons, the bowling, indoor track and field and swimmings teams will join the action.

Girls’ basketball set for two non-conference games

Enjoying its holiday break, the Richmond girls’ basketball team (1-2) will get back to the court this week with one home and one away non-conference game.

The Lady Raiders, who have dropped their last two games to tough opponents, will host Fairmont High School (3-0) on Wednesday at 6 p.m.

That will be followed with a road trip to Panther Creek High School (1-0) on Friday, the reigning 4A state champion. That game will tip at 6:30 p.m.

The junior varsity girls’ basketball team (1-0) will play both teams at 4:30 and 5 p.m., respectively.

Boys’ hoops to travel to First Flight

Fresh off a pair of wins at the Hoops and Dreams Showcase in Fayetteville, the Richmond boys’ basketball team (2-0) will make one of its longest road trips of the season.

Up first, the Raiders will play non-conference First Flight High School (1-2) in Kill Devil Hills on Friday. As part of the Good Guys vs. Cancer event, that game is slated to begin at 9 p.m.

The following day, Richmond play John Marshall High School (0-0) on day two of the tournament. The game against the 2023 state-championship winning Justices is scheduled for 4:30 p.m.

Richmond’s JV boys’ team will not play this week and return to the court on Dec. 5.

Wrestling to compete for second time

The Richmond wrestling program opened its season with a pair of losses last week and is looking to rebound this week.

The Raiders (0-2) will also be on the road and compete against non-conference Montgomery Central High School on Wednesday. The match will start at 6 p.m.

Bowling, swimming, indoor track and field teams to open seasons

Richmond’s boys’ and girls’ bowling, swimming and indoor track and field teams will all compete in their first respective competitions this week.

The swim team will open its Sandhills Athletic Conference slate at the Leach Aquatic Center in Raeford on Wednesday. Events will begin at 6:15 p.m.

Bowling will follow on Thursday at the Sandhills Bowling Center in Aberdeen at 4 p.m. The Raiders and Lady Raiders will bowl against Pinecrest and Southern Lee high schools.

And on Saturday, the indoor track and field teams will compete in the Polar Bear meet at Pinecrest against other SAC teams.

Sports editor’s note: The Richmond Observer will publish a season preview of both bowling teams this week. An edit was also made to the boys’ basketball team’s schedule.
