The Week Ahead: All RSHS winter sports programs in action

ROCKINGHAM — For the first time this season, all of Richmond Senior High School’s winter sports programs will be in action this week.

Basketball teams open Sandhills Athletic Conference play

After a week off, the Richmond boys’ and girls’ basketball teams will resume on Tuesday with their Sandhills Athletic Conference opener at Southern Lee High School.

The Lady Raiders (1-5) will play the Lady Cavaliers (3-3) at 6 p.m. in their only game of the week.

The Raiders (6-1) are set to play at 7:30 p.m. at Southern Lee (5-2) and look to extend their winning streak to five games.

Later in the week, the Raiders and head coach Donald Pettigrew will compete in the 5 Star Prep Hoops Jam in Knoxville, Tenn.

Richmond will play its opening game against Knoxville Catholic High School (8-1) on Friday, followed by its second game against Lebanon High School (6-3) on Saturday.

The Richmond junior varsity boys’ basketball team (3-0) will play on Tuesday at 4:30 p.m.

Bowling teams scheduled for one SAC opponent

Continuing their first round of SAC play, the Richmond bowling teams will bowl one more time before the holiday break.

Both the boys’ and girls’ teams are set to face Lee County High School on Thursday in Aberdeen. Action will start at 4 p.m.

The Lady Raiders (3-0) and Raiders (2-1) will also bowl an “open match” to collect points in the SAC standings.

Wrestling also opens SAC competition

Like the basketball teams, the Richmond wrestling program had a week off last week, but will begin SAC competition on Wednesday.

Richmond (2-4) will travel to Pinecrest High School and face the Patriots along with Lee County High School. Matches will start at 6 p.m.

The Raiders will also compete in another tournament on Saturday at Providence Grove High School.

Indoor track and field teams prepare for third meet

The Richmond boys’ and girls’ indoor track and field teams will participate in the N.C. Runners Holiday Invitational in Winston-Salem on Saturday. The event will be held at the JDL Fast Track.

Results from this past weekend’s second SAC indoor meet haven’t been released, but The Richmond Observer will publish results when they’re made available.

Swimming teams set for season-opening meet

The final winter sports program to start its season, the Richmond boys’ and girls’ swimming teams will compete at St. Andrews University on Wednesday.

Richmond will compete against the other SAC teams, starting at 6:15 p.m.
