The Week Ahead: All winter sports programs in action

All of Richmond's winter sports teams will be in action this week. (Kyle Pillar, sports editor)

ROCKINGHAM — For the second straight week, Richmond Senior High School’s athletic department will have a lighter schedule.

There are no scheduled events Monday or Tuesday. All of this week’s events are planned for Wednesday through Saturday.

Basketball teams to play Thursday and Friday

The Richmond boys’ and girls’ basketball teams will both play at non-conference Pine Forest High School Thursday (6:30 and 8 p.m.) and host Sandhills Athletic Conference opponent Southern Lee High School Friday (6 p.m. and 7:30 p.m.).

On the season, the Raiders have won seven straight games and have an 8-7 overall record with a 3-2 mark in conference play. The Lady Raiders are 10-5 with a 4-1 SAC record.

The JV girls’ basketball team (3-3, 2-2 SAC) will play at Pine Forest Thursday at 4 p.m. The JV boys’ basketball team (3-6, 2-2 SAC) will play at Pine Forest (5:15 p.m.) and host Southern Lee (4:30 p.m.).

Swimming to compete in final regular-season meet

The sixth and final regular season SAC swim meet is scheduled for Wednesday at the Leach Aquatic Center in Raeford.

The Raiders and Lady Raiders, who finished third and fourth in last week’s meet, will use the competition to gear up for the SAC championship later this month. Events will start at 6 p.m.

Wrestling to prepare for conference tournament

The Raider wrestling team will spend the week gearing up for the SAC championship meet Saturday at Union Pines High School. The team, along with individual wrestlers, will compete for conference title and postseason bids.

The SAC conference championship will begin at 9 a.m.

Bowling enters penultimate week of regular season

The Raiders (4-6) and Lady Raiders (7-3) will bowl another regular-season meet at Laurinburg Lanes Thursday. Fighting for points in the conference standings, both rosters will face Southern Lee and Pinecrest high schools.

Practice rounds will start at 4 p.m. with the first match to start around 4:15 p.m.

Indoor track and field teams travel to Winston-Salem

The indoor track and field season has been a rollercoaster for Richmond’s teams this winter, with just a select number of participants competing in invitationals.

Hoping to face some competition ahead of the conference championship and state finals meet, the Raiders and Lady Raiders will travel to the JDL Fast Track for a meet Saturday. It will begin at 9 a.m.
