ROCKINGHAM — With the Thanksgiving holiday in the coming days, a lighter week of Richmond Senior High School athletics is scheduled.
Only three programs will compete for Richmond — the boys’ and girls’ basketball teams and the football team.
Taking the week off will be the Richmond boys’ and girls’ bowling and swimming teams, as well as the wrestling team.
Lady Raiders look to keep up strong start
Off to a 2-0 start to the season, the Richmond varsity girls’ basketball team will try to double its number of wins this week.
The Lady Raiders will play on the road both times, starting with a non-conference game at Fairmont High School (2-0) Monday at 6 p.m.
Saturday’s game will be a 5:30 start time at Southeast Raleigh High School as part of its holiday invitational. Richmond will play reigning 2A state runner-up Seaforth High School (0-1).
The junior varsity girls’ basketball team (1-1) won’t play this week and returns Dec. 6.
Raider hoops starts season Monday
The Richmond boys’ basketball program will begin its new season this week with a trio of non-conference road games.
The Raiders will start Monday at Fairmont High School (1-2), followed by another road game at Westover High School (0-1) Friday. Both games are slated for a 7:30 p.m. start.
Richmond and eighth-year head coach Donald Pettigrew will end the week playing in a holiday tournament at New Life Christian Academy against the host Monarchs (3-7). That game time is to be determined.
The junior varsity boys’ basketball team will open its season Monday at Fairmont at 5:30 p.m.
Round three of playoffs set for Friday
Head coach Brad Denson expects Raider Stadium to be filled with fans Friday as the Richmond football team hosts its first third round playoff game in five years.
Calling the chance to practice and play during the week of Thanksgiving a privilege, Denson and the No. 4 Raiders (10-2) will host No. 5 Rolesville High School (11-1) Friday at 7:30 p.m. in the round of 16.
The Richmond Observer will publish a preview article on the matchup later in the week. Tickets are $8 a piece and can be bought at the gate (cash) or on GoFan.
