The Week Ahead: Basketball postseason, spring sports start

A busy week of spring sports and basketball playoffs begins Monday. (Kyle Pillar, sports editor)

ROCKINGHAM — The final week of February features an overlap of basketball playoffs and the start of spring sports for Richmond Senior High School.

Both of Richmond’s basketball teams are set to begin the NCHSAA 4A East state playoffs Tuesday. 

Also getting things started this week will be the Richmond baseball, softball, girls soccer and track and field teams.

No. 2 Raiders, No. 5 Lady Raiders host playoff opener

Richmond’s gym will be the spot for two NCHSAA 4A first-round state playoff games Tuesday, as the No. 2 Raiders (21-5) and No. 5 Lady Raiders (22-4) get their postseasons started.

Visiting will be the No. 28 Cleveland Lady Rams (13-12) and No. 31 East Chapel Hill Wildcats (10-15). Game times are 6 p.m. and 7:30 p.m.

Lady Raider softball opens spring sports

Set to become the first spring sports program to open its season, the Lady Raider softball team and fifth-year head coach Mike Way will begin play Monday at non-conference Jack Britt High School. First pitch is set for 7 p.m.

That will be followed by two home games against Randleman High School (Thursday, 6 p.m.) and Jack Britt (Friday, 7 p.m.).

Lady Raider soccer set for three-match week

Also prepared for a three-match opening week, the Lady Raider soccer team and sixth-year head coach Chris Larsen will play Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday.

The Lady Raiders will start with a trip to non-conference Jack Britt Tuesday (7 p.m.), followed by a home game Thursday with visiting Uwharrie Charter Academy (6 p.m.). 

The week will close out Saturday at Terry Sanford High School. Richmond will play Gray’s Creek High School at 4 p.m. as part of an early-season jamboree.

Raider baseball ready for season opener

Head coach Eric Brown officially kicks off his tenure as the Raider baseball team’s head coach this week when Richmond travels to West Cabarrus High School.

The Raiders, who have scrimmaged three times this preseason, will face the Wolverines Tuesday at 7 p.m. It will be Richmond’s only game of the opening week.

Raider, Lady Raider track and field teams begin Thursday

Also set to begin action this week are the Raider and Lady Raider track and field teams.

The Raider track team and head coach John Rich, along with the Lady Raiders and head coach Reggie Miller, will travel to Union Pines High School for an SAC meet Thursday. Events are slated to begin at 5 p.m.
