The Week Ahead: Lighter schedule for Richmond athletics in second week of 2022

ROCKINGHAM — A lighter lineup of Richmond Senior High School athletics is on the schedule for the upcoming week.

Basketball games against Lee County rescheduled

The Richmond boys’ and girls’ basketball teams were originally scheduled to play at home Tuesday against Lee County High School. But the Sandhills Athletic Conference games have been postponed to Feb. 9.

Athletic director Rob Ransom said the games were moved because of Lee County’s final exam schedule this week. Both Richmond teams also have Friday off, which was a predetermined open spot in their schedules.

The Raiders and head coach Donald Pettigrew will chase program history on Saturday when they play non-conference Lumberton High School in the Dr. MLK Jr. Basketball Classic at Red Springs High School.

Looking to improve to 14-0, a win by the No. 4 Raiders over the Pirates (9-2) would secure the program’s best start to a season in school history. Tip-off is set for 6 p.m. at Red Springs.

The Lady Raiders (9-4) will also play on Saturday, looking to extend their winning streak to three games. Head coach Teddy Moseley and company will play non-conference Cape Fear Christian Academy (9-2) at Terry Sanford High School at 3:30 p.m.

Richmond’s girls’ team is also off to its best start in SAC play, 4-0, since the 2010-11 season.

Bowling teams look to rebound with two more matches

The Richmond boys’ and girls’ bowling teams combined for just one win in four tries last week, but they’ll get another chance to collect points in the SAC standings this week.

Set to compete against Southern Lee and Scotland high schools, the Raiders and Lady Raiders will bowl on Thursday in Aberdeen.

It will be the second meeting against Southern Lee and the first with rival Scotland. Matches will begin at 4 p.m.

Swimming, wrestling return to action for the first time in new year

The Richmond boys’ and girls’ swimming teams will hit the pool for the first time in 2022 for their third SAC meet of the season on Wednesday. In their last meet before the holiday break, the Raiders placed third overall and the Lady Raiders took fifth.

Individual events will start at 6:15 p.m. at St. Andrews University.

Also back this week will be the Richmond wrestling program, which had to miss its match last week at Lee County due to COVID-19 protocols. Head coach Andre’ Ellerbe said the Raiders will return to practice on Monday.

The Raiders will compete in a match at Scotland High School on Wednesday, starting at 5 p.m.

Note: The Official Richmond County Male and Female Athlete of the Week features will also return this week.
