Basketball teams set for Pinecrest, Hoke County
Richmond’s basketball teams will resume their second round of Sandhills Athletic Conference play with a pair of games on Tuesday and Friday.
The Raiders (15-2, 7-0 SAC) hold the top spot in the standings and will look to sweep second-place 4A rival Pinecrest High School (10-6, 4-1 SAC). Richmond earned a 73-55 victory over the Patriots on Jan. 4.
That will be followed by a road trip to fourth-place Hoke County (7-12, 4-3 SAC) on Friday. The Raiders are on a season-long eight-game winning streak. Both games will begin at 7:30 p.m.
For the third-place Lady Raiders (7-10, 4-3 SAC), they will try to hand Pinecrest (7-4, 5-0 SAC) its first conference loss of the season.
Also traveling to last-place Hoke County (2-17, 0-7 SAC), the Lady Raiders will go for the season sweep. The varsity girls’ games will start at 6 p.m.
Opening the pair of SAC game nights will be the Richmond junior varsity boys’ basketball team (12-1, 7-0 SAC). The JV Raiders will begin at 4:30 p.m.
Regular-season final awaits bowling teams
The final regular season meet for the Richmond bowling teams is set for Thursday in Aberdeen. Both the Raiders and Lady Raiders will face rival Scotland High School and bowl an open match.
Richmond’s teams both defeated Scotland in the first round of conference play, and with another victory, the Lady Raiders should earn the SAC regular-season title.
The Raiders are in the hunt, currently in second place behind Pinecrest. The matches against Scotland will begin at 4 p.m.
Swimming readies for SAC championship
Despite having just two regular-season meets this winter, the Richmond boys’ and girls’ swimming team will spend the week getting ready for the SAC championship.
Swimmers will contend for individual event championships on Saturday at St. Andrews University.
Wrestling gears up for regionals, indoor track teams prepare for states
The weekend of Feb. 10 and 11 will serve as two big days for the Richmond wrestling and indoor track and field programs.
Richmond’s wrestling program finished fourth in the SAC tournament over the weekend and will use the next three weeks to get in shape for the NCHSAA 4A Mideast regional tournament.
Seeding will be held on Jan. 26 to decide which Raiders made the postseason. The regional event will be held at Fuquay-Varina High School.
Those same two days, the Richmond boys’ and girls’ indoor track and field teams will compete in the NCHSAA state championship meet. Both squads took third in last week’s SAC championship.
Several track and field athletes will represent Richmond at the state meet, which will be held at the JDL Fast Track in Winston-Salem.
