ROCKINGHAM — Another full week of Richmond Senior High School athletics continues Monday, which will be the fifth week of sports action this school year.
Volleyball team has three matches, Senior Night
The busiest team this week will be the Lady Raider volleyball team, which will play two non-conference matches and one Sandhills Athletic Conference match. Richmond (3-6, 2-2 SAC) and head coach Ashleigh Larsen start the week on the road at Sun Valley High School (3-2).
The Lady Raiders’ only home game will be Tuesday’s SAC matchup with Lee County High School (4-5, 1-2 SAC). It will also serve as Senior Night for the team’s three 12th graders: Saniah Durham, Kiersten Gibson and Allyiah Swiney.
Richmond’s final match of the week will be at home Wednesday against Pine Forest High School. The two teams met earlier this season and the Lady Raiders are looking to avenge a loss to the Lady Trojans (3-6).
All varsity matches will begin around 6 p.m. following junior varsity (4-5) action.
Raider soccer team seeking first SAC win
Head coach Chris Larsen and the Richmond boys’ soccer team (2-5, 0-2 SAC) will have two more chances to register their first conference win this week, starting with a home contest on Monday against Hoke County High School (7-2, 1-1 SAC).
Wednesday will feature a road trip to Union Pines High School (1-6-2, 0-1 SAC). The Raiders have dropped their last two matches to SAC opponents Southern Lee and Pinecrest, and will look to end the early slide.
Both matches will begin at 7 p.m. The junior varsity soccer team (6-1) will play Hoke County and Union Pines on the same days, beginning at 5 p.m.
Lady Raider golf hosts match this week
Playing on its home course this week, the Lady Raider golf team and coach Keith Parsons will host a nine-hole SAC match at Foxfire Golf and Country Club on Monday.
In their first match last week, the Lady Raiders’ three golfers combined to shoot a 187 at Scotch Meadows. Seniors Jamie Sears and Abigail Tatum, along with freshman Ella Munn, will look to improve in their second round.
Golfers will begin teeing off at 3 p.m.
Richmond girls’ tennis set for two conference matches
Fresh off a big win over Lee County, the Lady Raiders (2-4 SAC) will look to secure two more SAC wins this week, starting at rival Scotland High School on Tuesday.
Finding a more consistent starting lineup, head coach Jessica Covington’s team will then travel to Southern Lee on Thursday to start the second round of conference play. The Lady Raiders fell 2-7 to the Lady Cavaliers in their first match of the season.
Richmond will begin play at 4 p.m. on Tuesday and Thursday.
Cross country teams return to action
When the Richmond boys’ and girls’ cross country teams travel to Hoke County on Wednesday, it will have been two weeks since their last race. The Raiders and Lady Raiders were supposed to host an SAC meet at Hinson Lake last week, but it was postponed.
Also running in Wednesday’s 3.2-mile race will be Lee County. Richmond’s two teams each finished second in their lone race so far this year. Runners will start at 5 p.m.
Varsity football off, JV team plays at home
After starting its season with a 3-1 record against non-conference opponents, the Richmond varsity football team will have Friday off due to Southern Lee following COVID-19 protocols.
The Raiders and head coach Bryan Till will open SAC play on Friday, Sept. 24 at home against Pinecrest (3-1). Still scheduled for this week, however, is the homecoming parade.
The JV Raiders will return to action after not playing last week, hosting Overhills High School on Thursday at 6:30 p.m. Currently 0-3 to start the season, the JV Raiders and head coach Patrick Hope will look for their first win.
