ROCKINGHAM — The high school winter sports season is winding down, but several of Richmond’s programs will be in action this week.

Basketball teams seek extension of winning streaks

The Richmond boys’ and girls’ basketball teams will play their final two-game week of the regular season Tuesday and Friday against Sandhills Athletic Conference opponents.

Riding a 10-game winning streak, the first-place Lady Raiders (17-4, 9-0 SAC) will host Union Pines High School (10-9, 4-4 SAC) Tuesday and travel to Lee County (8-8, 4-4 SAC) Friday. Both games are set for 6 p.m.

The Raiders (16-5, 9-0 SAC) enter the week having won their last nine games and also secured the SAC’s automatic playoff berth last week. Also in first place, they’ll host Union Pines (10-9, 2-6 SAC) and visit Lee County (6-13, 2-6 SAC). Tip-off is 7:30 p.m.

Bowling teams ready for conference championship

After closing out the regular season last Thursday, the Richmond boys’ and girls’ bowling teams will compete in the SAC championship team and individual tournaments.

The Lady Raiders (9-6) finished second overall in the regular-season standings and will roll Wednesday at 4. P.m.

The Raiders (9-6), who placed fourth in the conference, will follow with their tournament Thursday at 2 p.m. Both events will be held at the Sandhills Bowling Center in Aberdeen.

Five wrestlers prepared for regionals

The waiting game is finally over for the Richmond Senior High School wrestling program, which found out it will have five competitors in the NCHSAA 4A Mideast Regional tournament this week.

Juniors Joseph Patterson (138-pounds) and Adam Estridge (144-pounds), sophomore Jason Gainey (190-pounds), junior K’Mauri Morgan (215-pounds) and sophomore Demonte Martin (285-pounds) all qualified.

Two sophomores set for state championship meet

Spending the past two weeks to prepare, sophomores Keonta Pegues and Ka’mora Watkins will participate in the NCHSAA 4A indoor track and field state championship.

Pegues will compete in the long jump and Watkins is set to compete in the high jump. The state title meet will be held at the JDL Fast Track in Winston-Salem Saturday.

Sports editor’s note: The Richmond boys’ and girls’ swimming teams’ season came to an end after neither had any 4A regional qualifiers.
