The Week Ahead: Regular seasons wind down, conference tournaments begin

ROCKINGHAM — Some of Richmond Senior High School’s spring sports teams will play their final stretch of the regular season this week.

The Raider baseball and tennis teams, along with the Lady Raider softball team, will wrap up Sandhills Athletic Conference action before beginning their respective conference tournaments.

Richmond’s boys and girls track and field teams, which closed its slate last week, will compete in the SAC championship in the coming days.

Raider baseball looks to make run in final week

Currently in third place of the SAC standings, the Raiders (10-8, 6-3 SAC) will have three chances to make a push this week against conference opponents.

Richmond and head coach Eric Brown, which trail Pinecrest and Lee County high schools in the standings, will make up a double rainout with Union Pines High School (10-9, 4-5 SAC) and look for the series sweep Friday at 6 p.m.

Ahead of that, the team will play its final two-game set of the regular season with fourth-place Scotland High School (8-8, 5-5 SAC). Game one will be at Scotland Tuesday, followed by game two and senior night at Richmond Thursday, both starting at 7 p.m.

This year’s seniors are James Eason, Isaac Hinshaw, Cain Hunsucker, Marquan Martin and Zane Searcy.

Lady Raider softball set for finale with Scotland

The Richmond softball team (6-9, 5-6 SAC), which is fifth in the SAC standings, has just one game this week.

The Lady Raiders will close the regular season at home against first-place Scotland High School (13-1, 9-0 SAC) Wednesday at 7 p.m.

Looking toward the conference tournament and state playoffs, the Lady Raiders are currently ahead of fellow 4A conference opponents Hoke County (10-9, 3-8 SAC) and Pinecrest (1-13, 0-10 SAC) high schools.

Raider tennis to recognize seniors, play SAC tournament

It will be a busy week for the Richmond boys tennis team (4-4, 4-4 SAC), starting Monday with its final regular-season match.

Hosting Scotland, the Raiders will recognize senior players Brentt Humann and Will Whitley. Singles play will begin at 4 p.m.

Thursday will see the Raiders travel to Pinecrest High School to compete in the individual and team SAC championship tournament. Those matches will start at 12 p.m. Final seeding has not been determined at the time of publication.

Lady Raider soccer starts penultimate week of regular season

Hoping to end a three-match losing streak, the Lady Raider soccer team (7-6-3, 3-4-1 SAC) will play its third straight week featuring a trio of matches.

Richmond will start and finish the week against SAC opponents Union Pines (10-3-1, 7-1 SAC) and Lee County (14-3, 6-1 SAC), which are first and second place in the SAC standings, respectively. 

Monday’s road match at Union Pines will start at 6 p.m. and Friday’s home contest is set for 7 p.m. against the Lady Yellow Jackets.

Between those matches, the Lady Raiders will travel to non-conference Purnell Swett High School (13-1) Wednesday and play at 7 p.m.

Raider golf to compete in second 18-hole match

After shooting its best nine-hole team score of the season last week, the Raider golf team will look to build off that Monday.

Competing in its second consecutive 18-hole match against SAC teams, the Raiders will play a full round at the Country Club of Whispering Pines. The shotgun start will get underway at 2 p.m.

Richmond track and field teams to compete in SAC championship

The Richmond boys and girls track and field teams will compete in the SAC championship Friday at Pinecrest.

Competing in individual and team events against the other SAC opponents, the Raiders and Lady Raiders will begin events at 2 p.m.
