ROCKINGHAM — The second week of Richmond Senior High School’s fall sports calendar will feature several home games for a variety of programs.

Football, boys’ soccer and volleyball all began competitive play last week, and joining the mix in the coming days will be the Lady Raider tennis team.

Volleyball seeks first win of season

The Lady Raider volleyball team will have two more opportunities this week to enter the win column after losing its first three matches. Head coach Ashleigh Larsen and Richmond fell to Uwharrie Charter, Purnell Swett and Pine Forest to open play.

Hoping to make the necessary adjustments with an underclassman-heavy roster, the Lady Raiders will see two of those same non-conference opponents this week.

Richmond will start on the road Monday at Purnell Swett, followed by a home match against Uwharrie Charter on Wednesday. Both matches will start around 6 p.m. following junior varsity play.

The JV Lady Raiders, who went 2-1 last week with wins over Purnell Swett and Pine Forest, will also play the same opponents this week. Those games will both begin at 5 p.m.

Raider soccer looking to ride early momentum

Head coach Chris Larsen and the Richmond boys’ soccer team earned its first win of the season with an exciting final-minute goal over Pine Forest last Wednesday from junior Ayden Mabe.

After going 1-1 to start the season, which included a loss to Lumberton, Richmond will look to capitalize with two more non-conference matches.

Up first for the Raiders will be a road trip to East Mecklenburg High School on Tuesday (6:30 p.m.), with a home match slated for Thursday against Sun Valley High School (7 p.m.).

The junior varsity soccer team, which is currently 2-0, will start both of its matches against East Mecklenburg and Sun Valley at 5 p.m.

Covington, Lady Raider tennis set to begin season

Opening play this week with two matches will be the Richmond girls’ tennis team, which is under the direction of head coach Jessica Covington. Having coached the boys’ team the past couple of seasons, Covington will now be the coach of both squads.

Jumping right into Sandhills Athletic Conference play, the Lady Raiders will host Southern Lee High School on Tuesday, followed by another home match on Thursday against Pinecrest High School. Action will get underway at 4 p.m.

Football gearing up for Saturday game against Butler

The Raider football team held on late against Mount Tabor to earn a 56-41 win on Friday, and will shift gears to prepare for another tough non-conference game this week. Richmond and head coach Bryan Till will travel to Charlotte to play David W. Butler High School.

Set to be played at Memorial Stadium, the Raiders and Bulldogs (1-0) will face off in a special Saturday night showdown. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.

Coach Patrick Hope and the JV football team (0-1) will look for their first win of the season at home against Butler on Thursday. That game will begin at 6:30 p.m. in Raider Stadium.
