The Week Ahead: RSHS winter sports teams set for busy week of conference action

ROCKINGHAM — The final full month of winter sports continues this week as competition heats up for several Richmond Senior High School programs in the Sandhills Athletic Conference standings.

Richmond basketball squads make turn in conference schedule

The Richmond boys’ and girls’ basketball teams both won their respective holiday tournament games over the weekend and will resume conference play on Tuesday.

Set to close out the first round of SAC action, the Raiders (13-2, 5-0 SAC) and Lady Raiders (6-9, 3-2 SAC) will host Scotland High School. That will be followed by another home conference matchup with Southern Lee High School on Friday.

The boys’ team is on a six-game winning streak and will look to stay atop the conference standings against Scotland (12-2, 4-0 SAC). The mid-season matchup could have implications of which team earns the conference title.

In girls’ action, the Lady Raiders are in fourth place and will try to hand the Lady Scots (7-7, 4-0 SAC) their first loss in the conference.

Both girls’ games will start at 6 p.m., followed by the boys at 7:30 p.m. The Richmond junior varsity boys’ basketball team (10-1) will also play both days, starting at 4:30 p.m.

Bowling teams continue second round of conference play

After the Raider and Lady Raider bowling teams split their two matches last week, they’ll get another chance to add two more wins on Thursday.

Set to bowl in Laurinburg, Richmond will compete against Union Pines and Lee County high schools as the second round of conference play continues.

The Lady Raiders (8-1, 36.5 points) are in first place, while the Raiders (7-2, 32 points) are in second place. Games will begin at 4 p.m.

Wrestling team to host final SAC tri-match of regular season

The Richmond wrestling team will close out its conference slate with its lone home match of the season on Wednesday against Hoke County and Scotland high schools.

Fresh off a 3-2 performance at the Montgomery Central Duals on Saturday, the Raiders (11-9, 2-2 SAC) will face the Scots and Bucks for the first time this winter.

Individual events will start at 6:15 p.m. at St. Andrews University.

Indoor track and field teams to compete in Winston-Salem

The Richmond boys and girls indoor track and field teams will continue their season on Tuesday at the JDL Fast Track in Winston-Salem.
