The Week Ahead: Student-athletes to balance final exams, contests

ROCKINGHAM — Final exams for the fall semester will take place this week at Richmond Senior High School, and as a result, there is a lighter athletic schedule.

Basketball teams have just one game

The Richmond boys’ and girls’ basketball teams will continue an extended break this week after its games at Lee County were rescheduled following Friday’s ice storm. Those games are now rescheduled for Jan. 27.

A regularly scheduled off night Tuesday will lead into the conclusion of the first round of Sandhills Athletic Conference play Friday at home against Scotland High School.

The Lady Raiders (9-5, 3-1 SAC) will try to get back in the win column after a buzzer beater loss. Their game with the Lady Scots (6-4, 2-2 SA) is set for 6 p.m.

Winners of six straight games, the Raiders (7-7, 2-2 SAC) will look to keep the streak going against the Scots (2-9, 0-4 SAC). That game will get underway at 7:30 p.m.

Richmond’s junior varsity girls’ and boys’ basketball teams will play at Scotland Friday. Those games will begin at 5 p.m. and 6:30 p.m., respectively.

Swimming, wrestling each with two events

It will be a busy week for the Richmond boys’ and girls’ swimming teams, as well as the wrestling program.

The Raider and Lady Raider swimmers will compete in two events, beginning with their final regular-season conference meet Wednesday at the Leach Aquatic Center. The first event will start at 6 p.m. and it’s also senior night.

That will be followed by the SAC championship meet Saturday. Also to be held in Raeford, the start time is slated for 10 a.m.

Richmond’s wrestling team will host a conference tri-meet with Hoke County High School and Scotland Wednesday. It is also senior night for the wrestling team, which will begin matches at 5 p.m.

Capping the week Saturday, the Raiders will wrestle at Marlboro County High School beginning at 9 a.m.

Bowling teams continue conference schedule

Bowling every week this month, the Raiders (3-5) and Lady Raiders (6-2) are set for another regular season conference meet Thursday.

Richmond will face Hoke County and Scotland for a set of matches at the Sandhills Bowling Center in Aberdeen. The start time is 4 p.m.
