ROCKINGHAM — The opening week of the new high school winter sports season is here.
Richmond Senior High School will see five of its winter program in action, as well as round two of the football team’s postseason run.
Girls’ basketball begins hopeful state championship season Tuesday
Interim head coach Taneika Reader and the Lady Raider basketball team will play a pair of non-conference home games this week to kick off its season.
Hoping to make a run at an NCHSAA 4A state championship, Richmond will host Panther Creek High School Tuesday (7 p.m.) and New Hanover High School Saturday (2:30 p.m.)
The Richmond junior varsity girls’ basketball team, coached by Tonia Breeden, will also host Panther Creek (5:30 p.m.) and New Hanover (1 p.m.) the same days.
Swimming teams open season Wednesday
Richmond’s boys’ and girls’ swimming team, coached by Ashleigh Buie and Lauren Brewer, return to St. Andrews University this winter.
After competing at the Leach Aquatic Center in Hoke County last season, the Sandhills Athletic Conference will bring its meets back to Scotland County.
Races against the other SAC teams will begin at 6 p.m. The Richmond Observer will publish a season preview this week.
Wrestling set for second meet, bowling begins Thursday
The Raider wrestling team will compete in its second meet of the season Thursday at North Moore High School. Richmond will wrestle against the host Mustangs and Central Carolina Academy, beginning Thursday at 6 p.m.
A second wrestling tournament will be held at Scotland High School Saturday. Results from Saturday’s invitational at Union Pines High School will be published soon.
At the Sandhills Bowling Center in Aberdeen, Richmond’s boys’ and girls’ bowling teams will start their SAC slate. Coached by Chris and Ashleigh Larsen, the Raiders and Lady Raiders will both bowl against Southern Lee and Pinecrest high schools, starting at 4 p.m.
A season preview for both bowling teams will be published this week.
Football hosts formidable Clayton in second round
The No. 4 Richmond Raider football team cruised to a 36-point win Friday to begin the NCHSAA 4A East playoffs. This week, head coach Brad Denson and the team will play at home again.
Richmond will get No. 13 Clayton High School in the second round. The Raiders (9-2) and Comets (10-1) will kickoff Friday at 7:30 p.m.

Cheerleading to compete in conference championship
Following Friday’s playoff game, the Richmond cheerleading team will compete in its first competition of the season.
Traveling to Union Pines Saturday, head coach Meredith Hood and the Raider cheerleaders will try to repeat as SAC champions. The competition will start at 10 a.m.
