The Week Ahead: Winter sports to resume following winter weather

ROCKINGHAM — Changes have already been made to the start of another week of Richmond Senior High School athletics.

Richmond County Schools canceled classes for students on Monday, which also postponed the Raiders’ wrestling match at home against Pinecrest and Lee County high schools.

That contest has been moved to Tuesday at 6 p.m. and will be held at the Ninth Grade Academy.

Athletic director Rob Ransom added that Tuesday’s basketball games at Pinecrest have been pushed to Wednesday. The varsity girls will play at 6 p.m., followed by the varsity boys at 7:30 p.m.

Wrestling, swimming programs prepare for Sandhills Athletic Conference championships

Following the Raiders’ home dual against the Patriots and Yellow Jackets on Tuesday, they will compete in the SAC individual conference championship on Wednesday.

Union Pines High School will host the event, which is slated for a 4 p.m. start.

The Richmond boys’ and girls’ swimming teams will also compete in the SAC championship this week, as they look to get back to full strength after following COVID protocols.

Head coach Mike Way explained the SAC championship will split the boys’ and girls’ teams up into two events. The first championship will be held on Wednesday, followed by the second championship on Thursday.

Both events will be held at St. Andrews University and begin at 6:15 p.m.

Bowling to close regular season schedule

Richmond’s boys’ and girls’ bowling teams will wrap up regular-season play with two more matches this week. Both teams have compiled a 7-3 overall record this winter, and the Raiders are in second place and the Lady Raiders are in fourth place.

The teams will bowl an open competition, securing an automatic five points in the standings, and then compete against rival Scotland. The regular-season finale will be held in Aberdeen on Thursday, starting at 4 p.m.

Basketball teams look to stay atop SAC standings

When the first-place Raiders and first-place Lady Raiders travel to Pinecrest on Wednesday, it will be just over a week between games. The showdown with Pinecrest will prove to be big for both teams in the standings.

The Lady Raiders (11-4, 5-0 SAC) will try to sweep the third-place Lady Patriots (9-3, 3-1 SAC) before hosting last-place Hoke County High School (1-14, 0-6 SAC) on Friday. In the first meeting, the Lady Raiders defeated Pinecrest in overtime.

For the Raiders (15-0, 5-0 SAC), the trip to Pinecrest will be a battle against the second-place Patriots (11-4, 4-1 SAC). Richmond is off to its best start in program history, and with a win can set a new program record for the most consecutive games won in a season.

Then on Friday, the Raiders will also welcome in fourth-place Hoke County (7-4, 3-3 SAC). Both girls’ games will start at 6 p.m, followed by the boys at 7:30 p.m.
