ROCKINGHAM — Arguably the fastest group of Richmond Senior High School student athletes raced its way into the No. 4 spot of the ROSports “Top 10 Sports Stories” countdown for the 2018-2019 school year.
This spring, head girls’ track and field coach Reggie Miller noted he had one of the “hardest working” teams of his nearly decade-long tenure at Richmond. That proved to be true with his 4×100-meter relay team, as the group of four underclassmen broke a 31-year old program record in the event.
At the state championship meet in Greensboro on May 18, the quartet of juniors Maddisyn Diggs, Monasia Kearns, Dymond McNeal and sophomore Jakerra Covington finished the relay race in 48.60 seconds, which was the fastest time in program history in the state championship meet.
The previous record was set in the 1988 state championship race with a time of 48.89 seconds. In that race 31 years ago, Richmond finished second overall, losing to Ashbrook High School by .36 seconds (48.53 seconds). This year’s team’s time beat the 1988 state championship meet Lady Raider time by .07 seconds.
“The 4×100 relay girls showed they are one of the top four relays in the state,” Lady Raider head coach Reggie Miller said following the impressive race time.
