ROCKINGHAM — The No. 6 moment in the ROSports “Top 10 Sports Stories” countdown of the 2018-19 school year doesn’t involve just one team from Richmond Senior High School. Instead, it includes over 20 student-athletes representing six different programs.
A total of 21 seniors from the graduating class of 2019 signed letters of intent or commitment to further their athletic careers in college. Twelve of those soon-to-be college freshmen inked their futures on Feb. 6, the nation’s National Signing Day, while the others were spread out over the course of the school year.
In what athletic director Ricky Young called “one of the biggest signing classes in recent memory,” the Raider football team had a program-high seven players sign. Heading to the Division I circuit are Jake Ransom (UNC-Charlotte, offensive lineman) and Malik Stanback (Wofford College, wide receiver), who has finished rehabbing from a torn ACL last summer.
Wide receiver and running back Bobby Terry is heading to Winston-Salem State University (Division II) and Jordyn Wall, another wideout, will play at Presbyterian College (Division III). Linebacker Taveon Ellerbe and defensive end Rasheed Patrick will team up and play at Louisburg College, a junior college. Caleb Ross, an offensive lineman, was the last to sign to North Carolina Wesleyan.
Young saw four of his baseball players sign that day as well, starting with pitcher Cameron Carraway inking his name to Wingate University (Division II). Alex Anderson, an outfielder who missed the majority of his senior season with a leg injury, will head to Johns Hopkins University (Division III) and play for the Blue Jays.
Middle infielder Tyler Bass will play at Brunswick Community College, and catcher Garet Weigman look to start at Guilford College (Division III).
The Lady Raider softball team saw all three of its seniors sign earlier in the fall, making it the first time that the entire senior class will play in college. Shortstop Savannah Lampley and pitcher Greyson Way will each play at the Division I level, signing to UNC-Wilmington and UNC-Greensboro, respectively. Taylor Parrish is going to Pfeiffer University (Division III).
From the soccer programs, Carlos Alcocer (St. Andrews University, NAIA), Nolan Allen (Piedmont International University, Division III), Tatum Hubbard (Methodist University, Division III) and Jayana Nicholson (Cape Fear Community College) will continue their respective careers in college.
Later in the spring, two basketball players and a tennis player joined this year’s signing class. Xavier Pettigrew and Alex Quick will continue playing basketball together at Pitt Community College, while Kevin Campos will look to help Thiel College’s tennis program in Pennsylvania.
