PINEHURST — Ninety-six players tee it up this week competing in the United States Golf Association’s second annual U.S. Adaptive Open Championship.

This is also the second consecutive year Pinehurst Resorts has hosted the new tournament as it was played on the same course — No. 6 — at last year’s inaugural event.

However, the tournament will head west to Sand Creek Station, Kansas for 2024.

The Adaptive Open is unlike any other tournament hosted by the USGA, showcasing players from all around the world with a range of disabilities with categories including: arm impairment; leg impairment; multiple-limb amputee; vision impairment; intellectual impairment; neurological impairment; seated players; and short stature.

Some familiar faces from last year can be seen back on the grounds this week.

Last year’s overall men’s and women’s champions are on site playing this week with Simon Lee (Intellectual Impairment) and Kim Moore (Leg Impairment) teeing it off early on Monday.

Other notables returning this year include Army veteran Chad Pfeifer (Leg Impairment), who finished in the top three of last year’s tournament; and Kipp Popert, who finished inside the top five.

The tournament is free to the public and is being played July 10-12. Tee times and other information can be found on the USGA’s website.
