WAGRAM — For the third time in four matches this fall, the Rockingham Middle School golf team posted the best team score and took home the victory.
Playing nine holes at Deercroft Golf Club, the Rockets hit a season-low score of 197 (+53) between its top four golfers. That was 13 strokes better than last week’s round and was seven strokes better than their previous team score from Week 2.
Also placing first at the top of the field for the fourth consecutive match was Rockingham’s Trace Wallace, who posted a 41 (+5). The eighth grader is averaging a score of 41.75 strokes per nine holes of golf this season.
Continuing to make his mark is fellow Rocket Damon Bryant, who was only a few strokes behind Wallace with a 45 (+9). Over the past two matches, Bryant has posted the same score, which has been a 12-stroke improvement from the beginning of the season.
Rounding out Rockingham’s score card were Matthew Cockman (48, +12) and Landon Summerlin (62, +26). Also participating, but finishing outside the top four spots, were Tess Bryant (66) and Ella Munn (70).
Hamlet Middle School’s top golfer was Grayson Mclean, who posted a 52 (+16) to lead the Red Rams. Other scores reported (but no names) were 54 (+18), 65 (+29) and 68 (+32), giving Hamlet a team score of 239.
Also competing was Ellerbe Middle School’s golf team, seeing the Wildcats shoot just six strokes behind the Red Rams with a 245. Connor Williams led Ellerbe with a 55 (+19), while Camden Williams posted a 58 (+22). Other scores for Ellerbe were Jordan McCormick (63), James Pack (69) and Ryder Craven (71).
All the golf teams will take two weeks off and prepare for the Southeastern Middle School Athletic Conference championship on Oct. 24, at Scotch Meadows Country Club in Laurinburg.
