ROCKINGHAM — Week 10 of the fall sports season has a lighter schedule for Richmond Senior High School’s six varsity programs still in action, but the stakes are heightened as the postseason nears.

It’s also homecoming week on campus, which brings with it an added excitement to the respective playing surfaces.

Volleyball opens SAC tournament, prepare for playoffs

With the regular season in the books for the No. 3 Lady Raiders, they’ll open the first round of the Sandhills Athletic Conference tournament at home on Monday. Richmond (17-5, 9-5 SAC) will welcome in No. 6 Purnell Swett High School, a team it’s beaten twice already this season.

Soccer to close regular season and honor seniors

The Richmond boys’ soccer team will look to continue its strong second half of the season with its final two regular-season matches this fall. The Raiders (7-9-2, 7-5 SAC) sit in third place and will look to earn two more wins to secure that spot ahead of the postseason.

First will be a road trip to Seventy-First High School (6-12, 1-11 SAC) on Monday, followed by senior night at home on Wednesday against rival and last-place Scotland High School (3-13-1, 1-11 SAC). The Raiders have beaten both teams once already, having outscored the Falcons and Fighting Scots by a combined score of 7-3.

Monday’s match will begin at 6 p.m., and Wednesday will get underway at 7 p.m., beginning with the recognition of the team’s 13 seniors.

Miller set for golf regionals

The Lady Raider golf team saw its regular season wrap up last week at Pinehurst No. 5 with a fourth-place finish in the SAC standings. But senior and No. 1 golfer Hailey Miller will see her season continue in Monday’s North Carolina High School Athletic Association’s 4A Central Regionals tournament.

It’s the fourth time in four years Miller has qualified for the postseason round, and her eyes are set to returning the the NCHSAA’s state tournament. Miller is coming off her best 18-hole score of the season (90, +18), and she’s looking to build off that. She played a practice round at Pinehurst No. 7 on Sunday, the site of the regional round, and tees off at 8:18 a.m. on Monday.

Cross country teams gear up for SAC championship

Just a step behind the volleyball and golf teams, the Richmond boys’ and girls’ cross country teams will close their respective regular seasons at the SAC championship on Tuesday. The meet will be held at the Carolina Horse Park in Raeford at 5 p.m., and will be the second time Richmond has run the course this fall. All eight SAC teams will participate.

Varsity football welcomes in Lumberton for homecoming

The Raider football team kept its undefeated season alive on Friday with a convincing 35-point win over Hoke County High School, and will look to do the same this week against Lumberton High School. It’s spirit week at Richmond, and the Raiders’ homecoming game will be against a struggling Pirates team that has lost six of its first eight games, including an 0-4 mark in SAC play.

Richmond (8-0, 4-0 SAC) is tied atop the SAC standings with rival Scotland, which has an identical record with just three regular season games remaining for both teams. The Raiders have a 32-1 all-time record against the Pirates, and a win Friday would mark the program’s 499th career victory.

Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m. at Raider Stadium and a community tailgate is scheduled ahead of the game.

In junior varsity action, the Raiders (4-2, 3-1 SAC) will travel to Lumberton on Thursday and look to extend their winning streak to three games. Richmond and Lumberton will get underway at 6:30 p.m.
