ROCKINGHAM — For the second time in less than a week, wet field conditions across the Sandhills have postponed several of Richmond Senior High School’s sporting events Tuesday.

Announced earlier this afternoon by athletic director Ricky Young, both the varsity baseball and varsity softball games scheduled to be played at Purnell Swett High School have been postponed.

The Raiders and Lady Raiders will make up their respective Sandhills Athletic Conference openers on Wednesday at 5 p.m. in Pembroke.

Head coach Wendy Wallace’s softball team had a previously scheduled non-conference game against Uwharrie Charter Academy on Wednesday, and she said no make-up date had been decided at the time of publication.

Tuesday’s postponement was the second time Young and the Raider baseball team have seen a game pushed due to weather early this season. Friday’s home opener against E.A. Laney High School was moved to Saturday, and in order to get the game in, Richmond traveled to Wilmington to play.

There are two other varsity athletic events still currently to be played as scheduled Tuesday at Purnell Swett. The boys’ tennis team, coached by Patrick Hope, is expected to compete in its SAC opener against the Rams at 4 p.m.

The girls’ varsity soccer team, coached by Chris Larsen, is set to also start conference play Monday against the Lady Rams. The junior varsity team will start things off at 5:15 p.m., followed by the varsity team at 7 p.m.

It will be the varsity team’s second match of the season, after defeating Cape Fear High School 6-2 on Saturday in Fayetteville. Tuesday’s matchup is the JV team’s first match of the spring.

Both the junior varsity baseball and softball teams will host Purnell Swett as scheduled, beginning on Richmond’s campus at 5 p.m.
