SOUTHERN PINES — The Richmond Senior High School boys tennis team wasn’t able to keep its winning streak going Wednesday.

Playing a make-up match from earlier in the season, the Raiders lost on the road to Pinecrest High School 9-0.

It was the second time this spring the Raiders fell to the Patriots, which also ended Richmond’s two-match winning streak.

“It had been a long time since we last played because of spring break, but the boys really played well,” head coach Jessica Covington said. “Pinecrest is always a tough opponent and our guys hung in there to make several of the matches interesting.

“Playing tough competition like this only makes us better,” she added. “We’ll take what we learned from this match and continue to use it to make us a stronger team the rest of the season.”

In singles play, No. 2 junior Matthew Leggett and No. 5 junior Gavin Applewhite had the best outings for the Raiders.

Leggett nearly pulled off the upset against Jack Hage, but came up just short 6-8. Applewhite faced Preston House and lost 4-8.

Making honest attempts against their singles opponents were No. 4 senior Will Whitley and No. 3 senior Brent Humann.

Whitley dropped his match 3-8 to Jake Maybouer and Humann surrendered a 2-8 loss to Corey Ingram.

Also competing for the Raiders were No. 1 junior Jordan Jacobs and No. 6 freshman Ben Lutz. They lost 0-8 and 1-8, respectively, to Kenan VanScoyoc and Mason Cromartie.

All three of Richmond’s doubles pairings — No. 1 Jacobs and Leggett, No. 2 Humann and Whitley, and No. 3 Applewhite and Lutz — lost in 2-8 fashion.

Richmond (2-3, 2-3 SAC) was scheduled to host Union Pines High School Thursday, but due to inclement weather, the match was postponed to a date to be determined at the time of publication.
