ROCKINGHAM — Zaviar Lowry, a senior cross country runner, has been named the Official Richmond County Male Student-Athlete of the Week presented by HWY 55.

Joining the cross country team for the first time as a senior, Lowry has consistently been the Raiders’ top runner all pre-season and during the first two meets.

Lowry’s efforts during last week’s race against a large field at Lee County High School helped him earn his first career recognition.

“SETTING THE PACE” WITH ZAVIAR LOWRY

Wearing a pair of Pit Viper sunglasses, Lowry was easy to spot during last week’s race in Sanford, but not just for that reason.

His kelly green and gold jersey stood out against the forest green jerseys of Pinecrest High School, which dominated the pack of nearly 60 runners.

Setting a new personal record in the 3.2-mile race with a time of 19:04, Lowry shaved a total of 64 seconds off his previous best result from the week prior. He was just two seconds away from a top-six finish.

Again pacing the Raiders’ roster, Lowry placed eighth overall to give Richmond eight points. The Raiders recorded 67 points en route to a third-place finish as a team.

The Raiders and Lowry will return to the course at Scotland High School on Tuesday, starting at 5 p.m.
