ROCKINGHAM - During their regular meeting monthly in January, members of the Rockingham Downtown Corporation chose John Hutchinson to lead the organization for the coming year.

ROCKINGHAM – Nearly every food eaten, item bought, and product used results in the creation of some amount of waste.  When thought about, everything from the cardboard boxes and styrofoam forms designed to protect items during shipping, to fast food wrappers, even down to the fingernail sized sticker on an orange are examples of trash.

HAMLET – As many in the community already know, Relay for Life is a yearly event that, for the past few years, has taken place outside Richmond Community College’s Cole Auditorium.

ROCKINGHAM – The Carol M. Birckhead Award honors outstanding county extension directors annually for extraordinary service.  In 2016, Susan Kelly, of Richmond County was nominated by her staff members and chosen as the Outstanding County Extension Director of North Carolina.

ROCKINGHAM – Sheriff James E. Clemmons, Jr., recognized two of his outstanding officers with certificates of achievement in the field of law enforcement on Tuesday, January 16.

ROCKINGHAM – Detective David Wall of the Richmond County Sheriff’s Department Criminal Investigations Division (Major Crimes Unit) reported the arrests of two teenagers regarding a shooting that occurred over the weekend, which spilled over concern and elevated security at Richmond Senior High School Tuesday.

ELLERBE – Monday, January 15, marked the 89th anniversary of the birth of Michael (who would later become Martin Luther) King.  On this holiday, the Sidney Grove Agape Center in Ellerbe was the scene of an energetic, yet respectful and introspective, luncheon in his honor.

ROCKINGHAM – One of the MLK Day Celebration Foundation Committee’s longest-running events emanated from downtown Rockingham on Saturday: the annual MLK Day weekend parade.

ROCKINGHAM – One of the many benefits that the Richmond County Chamber of Commerce is able to provide to its members is the opportunity to network and form connections with dozens of fellow local business owners. 

ROCKINGHAM - On Jan. 22, 1984, President Ronald Reagan issued a proclamation designating that date as National Sanctity of Life Day. Churches continue to honor that day on the third Sunday in January each year.
