EAST ROCKINGHAM - The second structure fire in two days in East Rockingham occurred on the evening of Saturday, June 23rd.

Personnel from the East Rockingham Fire Department were dispatched at 8:28 p.m. from Emergency Communications.

The address of this fire was at 156 Central Avenue in East Rockingham.

Units on arrival discovered heavy smoke at the front of the structure and flames escaping from the roof at the rear.

The heavy smoke made it hard for firefighters to reach the origin of the fire but once they were able to enter, it was quickly extinguished.

Cleanup and finding remaining hot spots took firefighters around two hours before the first units began marking back into service.

Cordova Fire and Rescue assisted East Rockingham Fire Department on the fire.

The structure was not occupied at the time of the fire and the last tenants had on moved out two weeks before.

Organized by the Richmond Downtown Corporation (RDC), the Affair on the Square has been a bi-annual event in the downtown area of Rockingham for several years.  A record number of vendors were in attendance and set up with their merchandise ready for public purchase.
