CHARLOTTE – Congressman Robert Pittenger (NC-09) issued this statement after learning protesters pulled down a Confederate statue in Durham on Monday evening:

ROCKINGHAM -- Richmond Observer accident reporter/photographer Harold Dawkins rushed to the scene Friday of a vehicle that had run off a boat ramp into the Pee Dee River. The incident occurred at the Pee Dee River boat landing located at the bridge on Highway 74.

The vehicle did have an occupant inside, and the driver had sustained what appeared to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound. The occupant was removed from the vehicle by an individual who was at the boat landing, and First Health Richmond EMS transported the driver to the hospital. The Richmond County Sheriff's Office is continuing its investigation of the incident.

4H Youth Attends NCACC Youth Summit

4-H’ers from Richmond County attended the seventh annual North Carolina Association of County Commissioners (NCACC) Youth Summit, which was held in Durham, North Carolina August 11-12, 2017. North Carolina 4-H and the North Carolina Cooperative Extension Service partnered for the eighth year with the NCACC on a multi-year initiative to increase youth involvement in county government. This initiative aims to overcome the mindset that many youth are disengaged and lack trust in government.

At 6:30am Sunday morning, tones were sounded for a structure fire in Cordova, paged out as a fully-involved structure fire at the intersection of Center and 2nd Streets.

Countdown to Kindergarten!

An enjoyable time was had by all at Discovery Place Kids-Rockingham as the regional children’s museum partnered with Richmond County Schools for a back-to-school event called ‘Countdown to Kindergarten’.

On Thursday afternoon around 6:15, East Rockingham Fire Department was dispatched to a vehicle fire at the intersection of Hwy 1 South and Eason Drive. There were no injuries to the driver and the fire was quickly extinguished upon the arrival of the fire department. Officers from the Richmond County Sheriff’s Office assisted with Traffic control until the scene was cleared. Units were back in service at 7:00 pm.

ROCKINGHAM – The Rockingham City Council, led by Mayor Steven Morris, held its monthly meeting for August Tuesday night at council chambers located at Rockingham City Hall downtown.

ROCKINGHAM -- The Richmond Observer announced today that it has tapped Jimmy McDonald as its new sports photographer.

"Jimmy is a tremendous photographer," said Lance Jenkins, co-founder of The Richmond Observer and agency manager at Farm Bureau. "We are grateful to have someone of his caliber on our sports team, and it really raises the bar for what we can provide our viewers."

McDonald's other photography work is highlighted in downtown Rockingham restaurant Patton's Grille, where his photos of landmarks in the Richmond County area line the walls. He also owns his own business, Jimmy McDonald Photography.
