Rifle reportedly found inside student vehicle at Richmond Senior

ROCKINGHAM — A firearm was reportedly found in a student’s vehicle at Richmond Senior High School early Tuesday morning, making at least the second incident this school year.

Principal Jim Butler sent out a message to parents saying that a rifle was found in the back seat of a student’s vehicle during a search of the parking area and that “appropriate action” has been taken to ensure the safety of both the students and staff of the school.

“We will continue to put measures in place to provide a safe and secure atmosphere for your student,” Butler said, thanking the school’s staff for their “diligence.”

Butler also encouraged parents to “talk with your students about making good decisions.”

Last month, a shotgun was found in the back seat of a student’s vehicle, apparently left there after hunting over the weekend.

At the time, Butler said he didn’t believe there was any connection to an alleged threat the previous week that resulted in the Richmond County Sheriff’s Office assisting campus police with patrols and running metal detectors.

According to state statute, it is a Class I felony to have a firearm on educational property, which includes: “Any school building or bus, school campus, grounds, recreational area, athletic field, or other property owned, used, or operated by any board of education or school board of trustees, or directors for the administration of any school.”

Possession of a BB gun, air rifle, stun gun, sling shot and certain knives and other weapons is a Class 1 misdemeanor.
