3 more COVID-related deaths reported in Richmond County

ROCKINGHAM — Three more Richmond County residents diagnosed with COVID-19 have passed away within the past 24 hours, according to the Richmond County Health Department.


The latest deaths make seven reported this month, six this week and 60 altogether.

All three died in a local hospital, bringing that total to 42. Fourteen deaths have happened at a healthcare facility and four have occurred outside of a health setting.

Earlier this week, Health and Human Services Director Dr. Tommy Jarrell had said he was concerned about the health of several residents who were hospitalized.

The latest deaths make seven reported this month, six this week and 60 altogether. October has had the most with 15, followed by 13 in December.

The race and gender breakdown is as follows: 10 African American females, eight African American males, one “other race” female, one “other race,” male, one Hispanic female, two American Indian males, 19 Caucasian females and 17 Caucasian males.

All patients have been between the ages of 31 and 95: 18 have been 80 or older; 18 have been in their 70s; 17 in their 60s; six in their 50s; and one who was 31.

As of Jan. 15, there have been 7,933 COVID-related deaths in the state, according to the N.C. Department of Health and Human Services. That makes 98 in the past 24 hours.

Johns Hopkins University reports (as of 11:26 a.m. Jan. 15) there have been 388,887 COVID-related deaths in the U.S. and 1,997,704 globally. The U.S. has had the most of any country, followed by Brazil (207,095), India (151,918) and Mexico (137,916).

Michigan, which has a population just less than that of North Carolina, has had nearly double the number of deaths with 14,511; and Georgia, which also has a comparable population, has had 11,975, according to JHU.
