ROCKINGHAM — In addition to two COVID-related deaths, the Richmond County Health Department reported nearly 50 new cases of the coronavirus on Wednesday.


According to the daily update, 48 more Richmond County residents have tested positive for COVID-19, bringing the monthly total to 665.

There are currently 451 active cases in the county, with 426 individuals under home isolation.

Statewide cases increased by more than 2,000 to 6,415. Tuesday was the only day this month to have fewer than 5,000 cases.

COVID-related hospitalizations across the state dropped to 3,740 — the lowest since Jan. 3. However, local hospitalizations remained at a high of 25 for the second consecutive day.

The number of COVID-positive patients at FirstHealth hospitals decreased by 10 to 88, accounting for 23.7% of its 371 census. Scotland Memorial Hospital had 41 patients isolated.

Earlier in the day, the Health Department reported two COVID-related deaths, both occurring at a local healthcare facility.

FirstHealth and the Health Department announced this week that residents 65 and older can now receive the Moderna vaccine by appointment.

Free COVID-19 testing will continue throughout the month in the parking lot behind the Health Department. Testing will run from 8 a.m.-5 p.m. Monday-Friday, except when closed for lunch from noon-12:30 p.m., and Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

There will also be free rapid testing at the Dobbins Heights Community Center Jan. 22 and 31.

Of all the tests performed on county residents, 25,867 have returned a negative result and 3,367 have been positive.

FirstHealth has completed 82,851 COVID tests (including some re-tests) with 70,595 negative results, 11,073 positive results and 336 results still pending.

According to DHHS, there have been 8,171,658 tests completed across the state. Of those, 690,912 results have been positive.
