HAMLET — Two Richmond County schools were temporarily on lockdown late Friday morning as a high-speed chase proceeded nearby.

"Out of an abundance of caution, Ninth Grade Academy and Monroe Avenue Elementary were in lockdown as authorities were involved in a high-speed chase," Jasmine Hager, public information officer for Richmond County Schools, said in an email.

Hager added that the schools were back in operation by 11:30 a.m.

"As always, the safety of our students and staff is our top priority," Hager said.

Both Hager and Sheriff James Clemmons said the suspect has been taken into custody.

Clemmons said the chase is being handled by the N.C. State Highway Patrol.

The RO is awaiting a returned call from troopers and will update this story as more information becomes available.
