ROCKINGHAM — After more than 30 years in the health profession, Dr. Tommy Jarrell is hanging up his lab coat.

Jarrell, who is currently director of theRichmond County Department of Health and Human Services, will be retiring at the end of next month.

Commissioner Don Bryant, following Jarrell’s COVID-19 update at Tuesday’s board meeting, told the director he’d be missed — although Jarrell hadn’t mentioned anything about his retirement.

Jarrell was employed by Moore Regional Hospital prior to being hired as county health director in 1991.

The past year has been a busy one for Jarrell with the onset and continuation of the COVID-19 pandemic, providing updates to local government bodies on local statistics, including case numbers and virus-related deaths.

The Richmond Observer will have more on Jarrell’s career in public health in a later story.
