ROCKINGHAM — If you’re considering running for local office, your chance starts next week.

Election filing starts at noon July 2 with seats — including four mayoral positions — open in all but one Richmond County municipality. Norman’s seats are four years, unstaggered.

Elections Director Connie Kelly said there seemed to be confusion regarding a filing delay due to late Census data, but that only applies to counties that are set up in districts, which Richmond is not.

In the county seat of Rockingham, Mayor Steve Morris is up for reelection, as are council members Anne Edwards, Denise Sullivan and Gene Willard.

The top two vote-getters in the council election will have a four-year term and the third-highest will serve a two-year term.

Hamlet Mayor Bill Bayless is also up for reelection this year, along with Eddie Martin, Jesse McQueen and Abbie Covington.

The seats up for grabs in Ellerbe are currently held by Mayor Fred Cloninger and council members Jean Fletcher, Elsie Freeman, Archie Robinson and John Sears Jr.

Since Hamlet’s Covington and Ellerbe’s Sears were appointed to fill out terms prior to the upcoming election,Kelly said  they have to run again to continue to fill out the four-year terms — and will have to run yet again in the next election to keep the seat.

Dobbins Heights only has two council seats opening, those held by Angeline David and Tyré Holloway.

All seats in Hoffman are up for reelection, as that town has two-year, non-staggered terms. Those seats are currently held by Mayor Tommy Hart and council members Ricarrdo Anderson, Rory Kevin Jones, Daniel Kelly, Cynthia Northcutt and John Taylor.

Filing fees are as follows:

  • $30 - Hamlet mayor
  • $10 - Rockingham mayor, Rockingham City Council, Hamlet City Council, Ellerbe Mayor, Ellerbe Town Commission
  • $5 - Dobbins Height Town Council, Hoffman mayor, Hoffman City Council

Filing ends at noon July 16.

Dobbins Heights will hold its election on Oct. 5, the other elections will be Nov. 2.
