ROCKINGHAM —  Members of four fire departments spent Friday afternoon fighting a blaze at an old mill.

The Rockingham Fire Department was dispatched just after noon to a fire at the office of the former Sara Lee Aleo plant on Mill Road.

The East Rockingham, Cordova and Northside departments responded for mutual aid.

Smoke was billowing from two sections of the top of the building for the first hour before flames penetrated the roof just after 1 p.m. and from two front windows soon after.

Crews attacked the fire from the left side of the building and from the ladder truck.

Around 1:30 p.m., the focus seemed to switch to keep the building behind the office — which is being used by Plastek — from catching fire.

When the RO left the scene just after 1:30, the fire was still active and the section of Mill Road in front of the plant was blocked off.

The East Rockingham Fire Department late Sunday night responded to a fire at an abandoned house across the street from the plant. That was the third time that house had caught fire in recent months.

The RO will have more information as it becomes available.
