HAMLET - Talent shows are a perennially popular place to showcase local vocalists and the Hamlet Business Development Association (HBDA) hopes to do just that with their first annual “Star Search” on May 5th.

The Hamlet Middle School gymnasium will be the venue and singers are the order of the day.  Carolyn Blue, a member of HBDA and the owner of Hamlet Florist on Main Street had proposed the idea at the group’s monthly meeting in February.  She is a singer herself and was involved in many singing competitions in her youth; she believes that this personal experience gives her the confidence she utilizes today to run her successful business.

Blue continued, “Bringing a talent show to Hamlet has been an idea I have kicked around for awhile.  The HBDA has been looking for a fun and positive way to reach out to involve the community in an event, so it seemed a perfect fit.”

Also helping in the planning is Trina Poplin, owner of Second Time Around consignments on Hamlet’s Main Street.

In addition to the pleasure of performing in front of an audience, the participants will be vying for prize money as well.  The top three winners will each receive a trophy with monetary awards of $100, $75, and $50 going to the 1st , 2nd, and 3rd place singers, respectively.

The winner will also be featured in the annual Hamlet Christmas parade in December.

Another goal of the show is to have funds to establish a scholarship for a business student at Richmond Community College.  This way the HBDA can help educate future business owners and support the academic efforts of our outstanding community college.

Auditions will be held at the Hamlet City Hall on Monday, March 26th at 5:30 p.m.  Appointments are necessary and you can contact Carolyn at 910 205-3607 or Trina at 704 475-1257 to set up a time.

The hope is to find 25 singers, age 10-adult, to grace the stage on May 5th and find our Richmond County Star Search winner!
