Richmond County Memorial Day service slated for Saturday

ROCKINGHAM — Richmond County’s veterans organizations will come together this weekend to remember those who have fallen in service to the nation.

Scheduled to speak at this year’s annual Memorial Day service is Jim Quinlan, who was elected commander of the American Legion Department of North Carolina last June.

Quinlan, an Iowa native now living in Shelby, served in the U.S. Marine Corps from 1971-1974 as personnel chief of Heavy Marine Helicopter Squadron 361.

He has been in the American Legion of 48 years and served 28 years as the National American Legion Baseball director until retiring in 2013, and is currently a consultant for the American Legion World Series, which is held each year in Shelby.

The service, scheduled for 11 a.m. Saturday, May 28 at Veterans Memorial Park, will also include a presentation of wreaths by the various organizations.

Memorial Day is a federal holiday observed the last Monday in May to honor those who died in while serving in the military.

Jude Howard, Richmond County’s representative in the American Legion Oratorical Contest, will lead the pledge of allegiance, Alphonso Perez is slated to perform the national anthem and Cameron McDonald has again been tapped to play taps.

VFW Post 4203 Auxiliary is providing a free lunch of hamburgers and hot dogs after the service.
