ROCKINGHAM - The Hive Recreation Center, at 1210 Rockingham Road, will welcome silhouette artist Clay Rice this Thursday, April 12 from 3:00 p.m-6:00 p.m.

Kristi Robinson, event coordinator for The Hive, states that Rice is an internationally acclaimed, award-winning artist and children’s book author. One can visit The Hive Recreation Center Facebook page to reserve an appointment to have a silhouette made of your child.  Robinson says, “A silhouette of your child makes the perfect gift for grandparents or Mother’s Day and is something that can be treasured for a lifetime.”

Rice is a third-generation silhouette artist from the low country of Charleston, South Carolina and was taught silhouette artistry from his grandfather. He began cutting professionally in 1981.  Rice is also an accomplished guitar player.

Robinson met Rice while living and working in Charleston. He actually cut Robinson’s silhouette in 1982. She states, “He’s incredibly relaxed and so fast. It takes him about 1 ½-2 minutes to cut a silhouette. It’s mind-boggling!” Robinson said that Rice travels all over the country and holds about 250 engagements a year. He is also available for school visits.

Rice uses silhouettes in his books and Robinson said, “In most of the books he can tell you who the silhouettes are modeled after.” His latest book is titled Ants ‘n’ Uncles.

The Hive is offering a giveaway on their Facebook page for a free Clay Rice silhouette. Like the photo and tag to enter.

Robinson speaks about the owner of The Hive, Sarah Ferguson, stating, “I love Sarah and love what she’s created here at The Hive. I think it’s such a community hub. You can come here, have coffee, chat and enjoy the activities. Your community is what you make it." The Hive is offering kids' craft activities the first Wednesday of each month.

An additional Hive event will take place this Friday at 5:00 p.m.: a Spring Pop-Up Art Show for the Pee Dee Artist Guild. Ferguson states, “Some very talented ladies will come and set up their art to share with the public. The art will also be available for purchase.” The Wildfire Pizza truck will be available as well as Nectar coffee and live music with Jonathan Robinson. This is a free event.
