ROCKINGHAM — A late-morning collision with a logging truck left one woman dead Tuesday.

According to the N.C. Highway Patrol, 62-year-old Susan Harrill McCaskill, of Hamlet, crossed the centerline  in her Toyota Camry on Wiregrass Road near Adetha Lane around 11 a.m. and ran into a Freightliner logging truck driven by Kenneth Williams, of Rockingham.

Troopers say McCaskill died from injuries sustained in the wreck. Williams was taken to a hospital to be treated for non-life-threatening injuries.

The exact cause of the wreck is still under investigation.

Richmond County Schools had to alter bus routes for Richmond Senior High, Washington Street Elementary and the Ninth Grade Academy, closing the back gate of the high school, according to Public Information Officer Briana Goins.

During Tuesday evening’s Rockingham City Council meeting, Councilwoman Anne Edwards asked her fellow council members and those watching the broadcast to keep McCaskill’s family in their prayers.

Edwards said she and McCaskill were “good friends” in high school and added, on a personal note that the victim was dating her sister’s ex-husband.

“It was such a tragic accident,” she said. “This time of year is always bad to lose somebody … so I think they (the family) would appreciate us praying and keeping them in our thoughts and prayers.”
